Los Angeles – Apple (NASD: AAPL) has acquired Poly9, a developer of
Web-based mapping technology, according to a report on French-Canadian news
site CyberPresse.ca spotted by Apple Insider.
The company’s products include a
browser-based 3D globe, somewhat similar to the Google Earth application.
The
Quebec-based company’s website is now longer accessible.
Along with Apple’s
acquisition of Google Maps competitor Placebase last year, the Poly9 deal could
signal the company’s intention to launch its own mapping software for devices
like the iPhone.
