Cupertino, Calif. – A day before the company plans to hold a
press conference to discuss its new iPhone 4 amid reported issues with the
device’s antenna, Apple on Thursday released iOS 4.0.1, which the company says
"improves the formula to determine how many bars of signal strength to
display" on the iPhone 4 and earlier iPhones.

Responding to reports of
reception issues, the company acknowledged that how a user holds a device can
generally affect cell phone reception.

But Apple placed the blame for any
perceived issues with the iPhone 4’s reception on an incorrect formula it was
using that calculated the number of signal strength bars to display — which
the update released today promises to address.

Meanwhile, independent testing of the iPhone 4 by Consumer Reports this week cited a hardware design flaw with the antenna, which ultimately led the publication to say it could not recommend the device.

  1. The entire iPhone 4 dropped call conundrum continues to give Apple a very bumpy PR ride. Apparently, Apple is going to hold a press conference tomorrow. It will be interesting to see what is said – and what is not said!
Apple can run… but it can’t hide.
