Chiba, Japan – Nintendo announced on Wednesday that it will
launch its 3DS handheld game system next year, missing the crucial holiday
shopping season, as the company cut its profit forecast for the fiscal year by
more than half.
Analysts assumed the company, which said the device would ship
by April 2011, would release the glasses-free 3D game system during the fall of
this year.
Nintendo said the 3DS will launch first in Japan next February with
a 25,000 yen ($300) price tag, followed by the U.S. and Europe in March.
Nintendo
also drastically cut its profit forecast for its fiscal year, which ends March
2011, to $1 billion from an earlier forecast of $2.4 billion.
