Los Gatos, Calif. – Online DVD rental and streaming video
service Netflix (NASD: NFLX) may offer a "streaming-only" subscription tier in the
U.S. later this year, PaidContent reported, citing comments made by CEO Reed
Hastings on an earnings call.

The company debuted such a service in Canada last
month, where it does not offer physical DVD rentals.

"If our results are
as strong as we think they will be, then we will look to start this offering
later in this Q4. Pure streaming could become our core offering in the USA, and
DVD would be offered as a supplement for an additional charge, like we offer
Blu-ray today," Hastings said.

Hastings added that the streaming-only
Canadian service is expected to achieve profitability late next year.
