Mountain View, Calif. – Google’s (NASD: GOOG) online e-book store, Google
Editions, is expected to launch in the U.S. by the end of December, a spokeswoman
told CNET News.com.

The Google Editions store will not allow consumers to
download a copy of the digital titles they purchase; instead, e-books will be
accessible exclusively through a Web browser, via any device.

The store will
launch offering titles for which Google has specifically negotiated digital
rights, plus the free, public domain titles it has scanned into its index.

The company
has yet to announce any publisher partners or release pricing details for Google Editions.
