San Francisco – Wired.com on Wednesday asked several law
school professors to comment on the legality of Zediva, a company that is
streaming new DVD releases to consumers via individual DVD players stored at
its headquarters. One attorney said Zediva runs afoul of copyright law because
it offers unauthorized "public performances" of the films, while
another argued Zediva is in a grey area, as courts have not yet directly
addressed how the "first sale" doctrine would apply to its particular
business model.
