Redmond, Wash. – Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) and Toyota (NYSE: TM) on Thursday announced
that they will jointly invest $12 million to build a global, cloud-based
telematics platform to share digital information between cars, homes and
phones.

The project will utilize Microsoft’s Windows Azure cloud-computing
platform, and is expected to first be implemented in 2012 Toyota electric and
plug-in hybrid vehicles.

The platform will help those vehicles manage power
consumption and communicate with the grid.

In addition, the platform will offer
an OnStar-like GPS and data system, and enable entertainment features like streaming
music, Wired reports.
