New York – Backplane, a start-up co-founded by Lady Gaga business manager Troy Carter that aims to power online communities based around artists, sports teams or other groups, has raised $1 million from an investor group led by Google chairman Eric Schmidt’s Tomorrow Ventures, The New York Times reported.

Lady Gaga also holds a 20% stake in the company.

Carter told The Times that Backplane will “provide a platform and tools for communities to socialize and communicate on a more focused level.”
