Mountain View, Calif. – Google yesterday unveiled a number of new features and enhancements to its search engine, including the introduction of voice recognition-based search for the desktop, image-based search, simplified mobile search, and Instant Pages that promise to speed page load times.
Users of Google’s Chrome browser will now see a small microphone icon on Google.com, which will allow them to speak search queries — a feature already available for smartphones.
Chrome users will also have exclusive access to the new image-based search feature, and Instant Pages — which sees Google guessing which link a user is most likely to choose for a particular search query, and loading that site in the background.
New shortcuts for common local search queries — such as restaurants and bars — have also been added to mobile search.
