Miramax Films is placing a confident bet that renting movies in Facebook will become a popular pastime. It unveiled the Miramax eXperience page, which is starting in beta with 20 titles but which will expand into a full environment and digital locker for movie fans.

The studio started with a Facebook app that lets users rent movies for 30 Facebook Credits each ($3.00 USD), for a 48-hour period, and watch them on a computer, Google TV device or Apple’s iPad tablet. More features and many, many more Facebook fans will be added soon, according to the company’s plans.

“Our goal with the Miramax App is to offer consumers a great user experience where they can watch movie clips and feature length films, play games and share the experience with their friends within the Facebook community,” the company said on its blog. “And in doing so, we aim to ultimately build our reach to 150 million+ Facebook friends within the next 18 months.”

The post goes on to detail its longer term plans with evident excitement. “You’ll notice we launched the App first with just rental VOD — but our ultimate goal is to give consumers the opportunity to buy films and store them in their own cloud-based digital locker — to then access the content anywhere they want, across ALL devices,” the blog reads.

At launch the available movies include Pulp Fiction, Chicago (pictured), Spy Kids, Clerks and Swingers.
