DC Universe Online, the massively multiplayer online action game from Sony Online Entertainment, kept its promise to go free-to-play just two days after its self-imposed October 31 deadline. Just two days after that, it had gained 120,000 new PC registrations.
Additionally, the number of people playing the game at any one time increased by 300 percent. Or to exactly quote the relevant tweet from John Smedley, president of Sony Online Entertainment, “wow. Over 120k PC registrations in 2 days for DCUO PC. 4x concurrent increase. Big TV and online campaign coming later in November.”
Anyone using a PC or PlayStation 3 can now download and play DC Universe Online for free. That includes creating their own superhero or villain, depending on personal proclivities, and join in the action with legendary DC Comics characters, including Superman, Batman and the Joker.
As with all free-to-play games, additional features and options are available to those willing to pay for them. Free players get access to the game and all game updates and fixes.
Former paid subscribers and anyone who has made at least $5 in-game purchases gain Premium access, which comes with additional character slots, additional inventory slots, higher cash limits and other benefits. Legendary access costs $15 a month and includes all of the downloadable content other levels must pay for separately, at least 16 character slots, over 60 inventory slots, the ability to form Leagues and more.
