Amazon.com’s CreateSpace and Lionsgate have partnered to make more than 100 movies available via on-demand DVD, including some titles that previously have not been available on disc. They will begin appearing in the catalog on Dec. 13, with more to follow in the coming year.
It’s difficult to believe that some of these titles are appearing on DVD for the first time. For example Pedro Almodóvar’s High Heels, which includes Javier Bardem in a small role, is on DVD in region 2 but now makes its disc debut in the Americas. Another similar example is Brighton Rock (pictured), Ray Boulting’s 1947 take on the Graham Greene novel, a noir classic which has a screenplay by Greene and Terence Rattigan and stars Richard Attenborough in the role he made famous in the stage version. Listed in the British Film Institute’s favorite British films of the 20th Century, it was given the U.S. title of Young Scarface.
Other movies included in the deal are making a return to DVD distribution, such as HBO’s Citizen Ruth and the Village People’s Can’t Stop the Music.
Ron Schwartz, executive vice president and general manager, Lionsgate, said the agreement made it possible for the titles in his company’s extensive film and television library to find their audience.
“Lionsgate has always been at the forefront, offering our consumers the ability to enjoy our entertainment properties wherever and however they prefer,” he said. “Working with CreateSpace is the perfect opportunity to deliver directly to the most ardent fans of this content.”
