MicroStrategy has released a free social and news app for fans of the most popular sports team on Facebook – FC Barcelona. The Spanish soccer club has 28.4 million Facebook fans, and the app is designed so they can simplify and deepen their social engagement with their favorite team.

The FCB Alert app aggregates and constantly updates news about the team and its affiliated organizations, sourced from websites, Facebook pages, Twitter and blogs. It also delivers interactive features like games, fan polls, and video and other multimedia content, all of which can be shared with other Facebook fans.

Team management can tailor the delivered content for different groups or individuals based on their respective interests, demographics, and geography using the data already in Facebook. From a more commercial perspective, the app also enables users to purchase FC Barcelona merchandise and equipment, and it includes exclusive offers and promotions from the team and the players.

Didac Lee, FC Barcelona’s director of New Technologies, said, “Using the Alert platform is a big step forward on multiple fronts. Connecting to our fanbase at a deeper level is what we’re here for, and MicroStrategy’s technology enables us to get that much closer to that core mission.”

Futbol Club Barcelona was founded in 1899 and now has an annual turnover of €398 million (about $527 million), making it the world’s second-richest soccer club in terms of revenue.

Founded in 1989, MicroStrategy is based in Tysons Corner, Virginia. Among its products are apps that connect brands, sports teams, celebrities, politicians and others with their Facebook fanbase through one-to-one targeted marketing.
