Facebook is set to add proximity awareness to the ways users connect with friends via its acquisition of Glancee, which lets people get pinged when they’re near someone they’re connected to or with whom they share interests.

The acquisition is another move to secure Facebook’s place in mobile, following April’s purchase of Instagramand its mobile photo platform.

Glancee was founded by Andrea Vaccari, Alberto Tretti and Gabriel Grise. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Facebook said all three become employees.

“We are thrilled to confirm that Facebook has acquired Glancee,” Facebook said in a statement. “The acquisition closed today. We can’t wait for co-founders Andrea, Alberto and Gabriel to join the Facebook team to work on products that help people discover new places and share them with friends.”

Glancee already has ceased operations. A notice on its website encourages users to download their data right away.

  1. Chris, Instagram, not Instamatic…whatever, proofreading/fact-checking aren’t important in journalism anymore — especially when the misspelled company name points to the original article referencing the CORRECT company name. Carry on.

    • Mea culpa, and thanks for pointing it out so I could fix it. I’m glad you realized it was just a stupid typo.
