Scott Thompson, whose brief tenure as chief executive officer of Yahoo came to an ignominious end for all concerned, has been named chief executive officer of online retail network ShopRunner.

Thompson served on the company’s board of directors during his tenure as president of PayPal, and both aspects of that role gave him experience that help make him a good fit for ShopRunner. The company’s co-founder and current chief executive officer Mike Golden will remain as president.

ShopRunner offers paid subscriptions that enable members to get discounts, special deals and shipping at no additional cost from its partner retailers. Members also can choose to pick up their purchases from a network of physical retail establishments. Among its over 60 partners are Toys”R”Us, American Eagle Outfitters, PetSmart, GNC and Sports Authority.

“Scott and Michael Rubin had worked together for a number of years, and Michael and I took him through the idea of ShopRunner early on. He had an immediate understanding of the potential impact of ShopRunner for consumers and retailers,” Golden said. “We are thrilled that Scott has taken us up on our offer to lead ShopRunner’s continued growth.”
