Seattle – Amazon.com (NASD:  AMZN) has announced that, as its Kindle
e-book reader has been the top-selling item on the entire site for the past two
years, the company now sells more books in the Kindle format than it does print
editions. "Even while our hardcover sales continue to grow, the Kindle
format has now overtaken the hardcover format. Amazon.com customers now
purchase more Kindle books than hardcover books — astonishing when you
consider that we’ve been selling hardcover books for 15 years, and Kindle books
for 33 months," said Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos.

"We’ve
reached a tipping point with the new price of Kindle — the growth rate of
Kindle device unit sales has tripled since we lowered the price from $259 to
$189," added Bezos.

The Kindle bookstore now offers over 630,000 e-book
titles for sale, in addition to some 1.8 million free, public domain titles.

Amazon
said that over the past three months, the company has sold 143 Kindle books for
every 100 hardcover books sold, while that figure jumped to 180: 100 in the
past month.

  1. “Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN) has announced that, as its Kindle e-book reader has been the top-selling item on the entire site for the past two years, the company now sells more books in the Kindle format than it does print editions.”

That’s not correct. Amazon stated that Kindle sells more than its HARDCOVER print editions.

PAPERBACK books, which make up the vast majority of print edition book sales, dwarf the sales of Kindle books.

Speaking as a publisher, our print edition (Paperback) sales on Amazon are about 200 times that of our Kindle sales. Kindle is essentially a novelty which we must support to gain exposure.
