Mountain View, Calif. – Google (NASD: GOOG) announced on Tuesday that it
will provide $5 million in grant money to non-profits "working to develop
new approaches to journalism in the digital age."
The company is providing
$2 million to the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, half of which will be
earmarked to support U.S. grant-making, with the other half going to the Knight
News Challenge, which accepts proposals from anywhere in the world.
The News
Challenge has fostered projects such as DocumentCloud, which aims to bring more
source materials from investigative reporting online.
The remaining $3 million will
be granted to "journalism projects in other countries through a similar
partnership," the company said.
"We hope these grants will help new
ideas blossom and encourage experimentation," said Nikesh Arora, president
of Google’s global sales operations and business development unit.
