Port Washington, N.Y. – U.S. video game sales were down 4%
in March, to $1.53 billion, as hardware sales climbed while sales of game software
fell, according to a report from market research firm NPD Group. Game console
sales were up 12%, to $494.5 million. Launched on March 27, the Nintendo 3DS was the best-selling hardware platform of the month.
NPD said the 3DS
sold about 100,000 units less than its predecessor the DS — which launched
during a holiday shopping season — but the $100 price differential between the
devices means the 3DS generated greater revenues at launch than did the DS.
Video game software sales were down 16% in March, to $735.4 million.
The
top-selling games in March were Nintendo’s "Pokemon White" and
"Pokemon Black, " followed by THQ’s "Homefront," Electronic
Arts’ "Dragon Age II" and Activision’s "Call of Duty: Black
Ops."
