Seattle – Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN) said on Thursday that the company is now selling more Kindle e-books than hardcover and paperback books combined.

Amazon began selling print books in 1995, and twelve years later launched the Kindle, in November 2007.

Six months later, Kindle book sales had surpassed hardcover book sales at Amazon, and now six months after that, e-book sales have overtaken print book sales.

“Customers are now choosing Kindle books more often than print books. We had high hopes that this would happen eventually, but we never imagined it would happen this quickly – we’ve been selling print books for 15 years and Kindle books for less than four years,” said Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon.com.

Bezos added that the newly-introduced, partially advertising-supported Kindle with Special Offers is now the bestselling Kindle model.
