Wickford, Eng. — The alleged 19-year-old mastermind behind the hacker group LulzSec was arrested in Essex, England on Tuesday in a joint effort between the Scotland Yard and the FBI, Sky News reported.
LulzSec made the news earlier this summer when it took credit for a cyberattack on Sony. The group attacked servers at Sony Pictures and Sony BMG and posted consumer data stolen online, including email addresses and passwords from 50,000 consumers who had signed up for three Sony promotions. Nintendo, EVE Online, the CIA and the U.S. Senate were also allegedly hacked by the group, whose website tagline reads: “A team of entertainment and security experts that specialize in the production of malicious comedic cybermaterials.”
“The arrest follows an investigation into network intrusions and distributed denial of service attacks against a number of international business and intelligence agencies by what is believed to be the same hacking group. Searches at a residential address in Wickford, Essex, following the arrest last night have led to the examination of a significant amount of material,” said a Scotland Yard spokesman to Sky News.
