Apple Sues Amazon Over Use of "App Store" Trademark

0

Cupertino, Calif. – Apple (NASD: AAPL) has filed a trademark infringement
claim against online retail giant Amazon.com (NASD: AMZN), claiming its use of the term
"app store" infringes on Apple’s App Store for its iOS devices,
Bloomberg reported.

Filed in federal court in California last week, the lawsuit
says Amazon is creating confusion among consumers and engaging in unfair
competition with its "Amazon Appstore Developer Portal" and related
uses of the phrase.

Amazon on Tuesday introduced its Android Appstore, which offers nearly 3,800 apps for mobile devices running Google’s Android operating system.

Apple has filed to register "app store" as a
trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, but is facing opposition
from Microsoft (NASD: MSFT), which has opposed the registration.

Verizon Wireless Won't Pursue Sprint Nextel, CEO Says

0

Reston, Va. – The head of Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ) said he has no
plans to pursue Sprint Nextel (NYSE: S), despite the fact that AT&T’s (NYSE: T) planned $39
billion acquisition of T-Mobile USA would knock his company from the top of the
U.S. wireless market, Reuters reported. "We’re not interested in Sprint.
We don’t need them," CEO Daniel Mead told the wire service.

Some analysts
had expected AT&T’s announcement of the deal on Sunday to prompt a similar
move by Verizon Wireless, with Sprint Nextel being the most likely target.

Prior to the news, Sprint had been rumored to be in talks about a possible
combination with T-Mobile.

Shares of Sprint sank 14% on Monday, amid concerns
the company won’t be able to compete with its two larger competitors.
