Tokyo – An estimated $42
billion worth of game software for the Sony PSP and Nintendo DS was downloaded
from unauthorized download sites between 2004 and 2009, according to a report
from the Computer Entertainment Supplies Association, which puts on Japan’s annual
Tokyo Game Show.

The report arrived at the figure by monitoring downloads on
the 20 top-selling titles across 114 unauthorized sites, multiplying that figure
by the titles’ retail prices, and then using a ratio to apply the figure to the
entire market.

Notably, the report did not monitor downloads on actual
peer-to-peer file-sharing networks — only sites offering pirated game software
downloads.
