Oakbrook Terrace,
Ill.
– Redbox, a unit of Coinstar (NASD:  CSTR)
that operates a network of $1-per-day DVD rental kiosks, has
signed a long-term agreement with Viacom’s Paramount Home Entertainment, who will provide Redbox with its new
releases on the same day they go on sale.

Paramount said in a statement that that a test they have conducted with Redbox has shown that
“day-and-date rental activity has had minimal impact on our DVD sales.”

Paramount is joining other studios – Sony , Lions Gate, and Walt Disney – all of which let Redbox rent
their new DVDs on the same day they go on sale, according to Paid Content. Fox, Universal, and Warner Bros. all still delay the
release of their movies to Redbox for 28 days in an attempt to protect
sales of their new DVDs.
