Mountain View, Calif. – Google (NASD: GOOG) announced that it has
acquired Metaweb, the operator of "an open database of things in the

2005, San Francisco-based Metaweb’s database includes over 12 million things,
including movies, books, celebrities and companies.
Google believes the deal
will improve its search results, and that Metaweb will help it become able to
more directly answer search queries like, "actors over 40 who have won at
least one oscar," or "colleges on the west coast with tuition under
Google and Metaweb plan to maintain Freebase as a free and open
database for the world, as well as contribute to its firther development.
