London – The websites of the Motion Picture Association of
America (MPAA) and Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) were
briefly knocked offline over the weekend, the result of denial-of-service
attacks orchestrated by file-sharing advocates organizing on the 4chan message
board, according to reports. The "Operation Payback" attack was
reportedly hatched in response to the entertainment industry lobbying groups’
legal campaign against The Pirate Bay, and more recently their use of an
India-based firm called Aiplex that has launched cyber attacks on file-sharing
sites.
