Dulles, Va. – The Internet is quickly closing in on 200
million registered domain names, according to a new report from Internet
infrastructure firm VeriSign.

Domain names grew by more than 3 million to
finish the second quarter at 196.3 million globally.

More than half of those
(101.5 million) fall under either .com or .net.

VeriSign also said the pace of
new registrations is increasing, with new .com and .net names totaling 7.9
million during the second quarter, up 13% from the same time in 2009.
