New York – On the eve of this year’s Sundance Film Festival,
the Ford Foundation announced a five-year, $50 million initiative to fund
filmmakers whose works address urgent social issues.

The JustFilms initiative
will invest $10 million a year in film, video and digital works "that show
courageous people confronting difficult issues and actively pursuing a more
just, secure and sustainable world."

The initiative will pursue funding
paths including partnerships with the Sundance Institute, Independent
Television Service, and similar organizations; a direct, open application process
to JustFilms; and partnerships with other Ford Foundation grant-making programs
where a documentary could help draw attention to a particular issue.

"This
major new commitment to documentaries reflects our recognition that individual
stories — meaningful and well-told — can be a powerful instrument of
change," said Orlando Bagwell, a filmmaker and director of the JustFilms
initiative.
