Los Angeles – Redbox, the DVD rental kiosk unit of Coinstar (NASD: CSTR),
plans to launch an subscription-based online video streaming service to compete
with Netflix (NASD: NFLX) and others, the Los Angeles Times reported, citing comments made
by Redbox president Mitch Lowe during a meeting with analysts. The service
would charge users a single monthly fee for access to streaming movies and TV
episodes across multiple devices.

No technology partner has yet been named for
Redbox’s streaming plans.

The Times cited sources as saying Amazon.com is also
in talks with movie studios to acquire content for a streaming service,
"making it a likely candidate to be Redbox’s partner."
