Espoo, Finland – Mobile game publisher Rovio, creator of the
breakout hit "Angry Birds," announced on Thursday that it has
received $42 million in its first round of financing. The round was co-led by
Accel Partners and Atomico, the venture capital firm founded by Skype
co-founder Niklas Zennstrom; Felicis Ventures also participated.
Finland-based
Rovio now counts 40 million monthly active players of "Angry Birds,"
while sales of Angry Birds plush toys recently surpassed 2 million units.
The
company said it is currently developing an online version of "Angry
Birds" set for release this summer, and versions for all game consoles
expected later in the year.
