New York – AOL (NYSE: AOL) on Monday launched a new trade media unit called AOL Industry, which the company said will aim to bring subject-specific news, video and social networking tools to professionals in the energy, government and defense sectors.

The first of the sites, AOL Energy, launched on Monday, with the others planning to launch shortly.

All three plan to incorporate features from professional business network LinkedIn.

“Launching AOL Industry allows us to bring to specific business sectors the same sense of community for which AOL Huffington Post Media Group consumer sites are well-known,” said Arianna Huffington, the president of AOL Huffington Post Media Group.

“We’re applying a blend of news, opinion and engagement to industries that have their own unique audiences, and creating a forum for influencers to connect and communicate with one another.”

Jay Kirsch, the former CEO of Imaginova, will lead the unit as the vice president and general manager of AOL Industry.

Peter Gardett, Wyatt Kash and Colin Clark will serve as the editors of AOL Energy, AOL Government and AOL Defense, respectively.
