Mountain View, Calif. — Symantec, the Mountain View-based Internet security software and services giant, said on Monday that board member Steve Bennett will succeed former CEO John Thompson as chairman in October.

Thompson will serve the remainder of his term, but has chosen not to stand for reelection.

Bennett joined Symantec’s board in Feb. 2010, and previously served as the president and CEO of Intuit. He also previously spent 23 years at GE. Thompson has been an active investor in early-stage technology companies in Silicon Valley, and recently became the chief executive officer of one of the portfolio companies, Virtual Instruments.
