Lockerz, a membership site that rewards its members for interacting with content, today announced the acquisition of Vodpod.com and related assets from Remixation Inc. Now Lockerz members will be able to earn the community’s virtual currency by creating personalized channels featuring video content from anywhere online in addition to the Lockerz library of videos.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Vodpod will continue to operate unchanged. Meanwhile, the Remixation team will focus its efforts on Showyou, the social video discovery application for iOS it launched in April.
Video is one of the most popular features on Lockerz, with a library that includes thousands of music videos from the likes of Katy Perry, Coldplay and Snoop Dogg, as well as three Lockerz original content series. Existing content partners include EMI Music, Live Nation Entertainment and Entertainment.com.
Members who curate Vodpod video channels will earn Lockerz PTZ, the site’s virtual currency, which can be redeemed for discounts on fashion, accessories, entertainment, electronics and other name brand products sold on the Lockerz Shop. Other ways to earn include watching videos, uploading photos, inviting friends, and answering one-question polls.
“Lockerz is building the leading platform to reward social expression, and our members are passionate about their favorite videos,” said Kathy Savitt, founder and CEO of Lockerz. “Lockerz members curate their entire world, from music to fashion to video clips, and we are excited to offer them the ability to get rewarded for sharing what they love.”
Lockerz reports having 45 million unique visitors monthly. Based in Seattle, the company is backed by Liberty Media Corporation, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, DAG Ventures and Live Nation Entertainment.
