Location-based mobile gaming company Red Robot Labs has acquired British independent gaming company Supermono and brought on games industry veteran Phil Harrison as an advisor. As part of this growth, the company will open offices in London as a base to enter the U.K. market and for further expansion of its gaming platform.

Supermono will continue to operate as an independent enterprise with Red Robot as a parent company.

Red Robot released its first game, Life Is Crime, less than a year after the company was formed in January 2011. In February the Palo Alto, Calif.-based Red Robot secured $8.5 million in Series A funding from Benchmark Capital and Shasta Ventures, with participation from existing investors Playdom co-founder Rick Thompson and former Facebook executive Chamath Palihapitiya.

Harrison is general partner at London Venture Partners. His former positions include co-founder and president of Worldwide Studios at Sony Computer Entertainment, in which role he was key to the creation and development of the PlayStation business, and president and board director of Atari.

Life Is Crime is a location-based massively multiplayer online game that challenges players to commit virtual crimes at real locations: “Visit places to perform missions, sell contraband, and fight other players to own a location. The more active you are, the higher your criminal reputation and the more notorious you become.”

Mike Ouye, chief executive officer and co-founder of Red Robot Labs, said fans could expect new titles in the near future.

Harrison added: “I’m really impressed with what the team at Red Robot has achieved in less than a year. Life Is Crime has proven their ability to succeed in the mobile game space and the addition of the U.K. studio gives the company access to even more talent.”

Supermono’s latest release is Forever Drive, a mobile racing game topping the charts in more than 50 countries. “Supermono is a company committed to creating distinctive and beautiful games for the portable gaming world. We continually seek to capture the imagination of people, and our efforts have achieved stand out industry and gamer recognition. Merging with a studio as innovative and energetic as Red Robot will let us continue to be as creative as we can be – and to keep creating awesome entertainment for everyone!” said Tak Fung, U.K. general manager and technical director.
