Paramount Pictures’ Rango was named Best Animated Feature at the 39th annual Annie Awards, which were held Feb. 4 and for the first time were streamed live.

Rango, featuring the voice of Johnny Depp, also won the newly created Member’s Favorite award, which was voted on by the entire membership of ASIFA-Hollywood, the largest chapter of the professional organization dedicated to all things related to animation and animators.

The event was hosted by Patton Oswalt, who along with his many other credits was the voice of Remy in the Oscar-winning Ratatouille. The streaming was enabled by Ustream.

The organization’s Winsor McCay Award, which recognizes career contributions to the art of animation, went to Walt Peregoy, Borge Ring and the late Ronald Searle.

Among the other awards, The Simpsons took Best Animated TV Production; Psyop’s Twinings Sea was selected Best Television Commercial; and Planet Production’s Insanely Twisted was voted Best Video Game.

“This was a great evening, with a lot of fun and surprises,” said ASIFA-Hollywood president Frank Gladstone. “Annies went to a huge variety of individuals and studios. This goes directly to ASIFA-Hollywood’s vision of celebrating the best in animation across project, studio and geographic boundaries.”
