London – U.S. spending on digital forms of home video
entertainment accounted for 13.5% of total home entertainment spending so far
this year, Broadband TV News reported, citing figures from the Digital
Entertainment Group.
Total consumer spending on home entertainment — which
includes DVD, Blu-ray and digital distribution — was $12.6 billion during the
first three quarters of 2010, down 4% from the same period last year.
Digital
download spending (electronic sell-through or EST) is up 37% so far this year,
to $432 million, while video-on-demand spending is up 20% to $1.2 billion.
Spending
on Blu-ray and DVD discs combined is down 8% this year, although Blu-ray spending
measured separately is up 80% to $1 billion.
Blu-ray shipments through the
first three quarters of 2010 total 98 million, up 57% from 2009, while the U.S.
installed base of Blu-ray players is now 21.1 million households.
