San Francisco – MasterCard has informed entertainment
industry trade groups that it is willing to cease processing transactions on
sites that are illegally offering copyrighted media content, CNET News.com
reported, citing sources with knowledge of the talks.
MasterCard has reportedly
told groups such as the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) that
it supports the Combating Online Infringements and Counterfeits Act (COICA), a
bill that would, among other things, empower the Justice Dept. to compel
payment processors to sever ties to pirate sites.
"MasterCard in
particular deserves credit for its proactive approach to addressing rogue Web
sites that dupe consumers," Mitch Glazier, the RIAA’s executive vice
president of government and industry relations.
"They have reached out to
us and others in the entertainment community to forge what we think will be a
productive and effective partnership."

Well done MC! If all legit businesses would join forces to combat piracy we would be able to create jobs, ensure investment in exciting offerings for consumers, and force people to have some kind of moral conscience (since to our shame it doesn’t seem to happen voluntarily).
