Los Angeles – Liberty Media has filed a copyright
infringement lawsuit against online file-storage service Hotfile, in addition
to 1,000 users of the service, and payments firm PayPal, TorrentFreak reported.
Liberty claims it found more than 2,400 links to 800 of its copyrighted titles
stored on Hotfile.
Filed on Jan. 6, the lawsuit asks a federal court to seize
Hotfile’s domain during the proceedings, and to compel PayPal to freeze
Hotfile’s payments account.
The suit alleges Hotfile is owned by a Russian
named Anton Titov, and also names Lemuria Communications as a defendant.
Liberty notes that while Lemuria was filed as a registered agent under the
Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) at the time of the infringements — a
move required in order to claim "safe harbor" protects it from
copyright infringements committed by users — Hotfile was not.
Liberty is
seeking a jury trial, and statutory damages of $150,000 per work.
