Redmond, Wash. – Confirming media reports from last week,
Nintendo announced on Monday that it will release a successor to its Wii video
game console in 2012, and preview a playable model at the industry’s E3 Expo in
June in Los Angeles. Nintendo said that the original Wii has now sold over 86
million units worldwide, from its launch in 2006 through the end of March.

If
another report from last week is credible, Nintendo will have the 2012-2013
next-generation console hardware market to itself — as Sony (NYSE: SNE) and Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) are
not expected to introduce successors to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360,
respectively, until 2014.

Nintendo noted that sales of the new system have not
been included in its financial forecasts for its fiscal year ending March 2012.
