Cupertino, Calif. – Apple’s (NASD: AAPL) attorneys have stepped in to defend iPhone and iPad application developers, who have been targeted with patent infringement claims and demands for licensing fees, Wired reported.
Lodsys sent letters to a number of application developers earlier this month, alleging that they are using its patented technology related to an “upgrade” button that lets consumers upgrade from free to paid versions of apps.
Apple has now stepped in and told Lodsys that it already paid the company licensing fees that cover the developers’ actions.
“Apple is undisputedly licensed to these patent and the Apple App Makers are protected by that license,” wrote Apple general counsel Bruce Sewell.
“Apple intends to share this letter and the information set out herein with its App Makers and is fully prepared to defend Apple’s license rights.”
