Seattle, Wash. — RealNetworks, a provider of Internet media delivery software and services, launched its Unifi cloud media service, the company announced Tuesday.
Initially Unifi will only be available in Germany. The U.S. service is planned to launch later this fall, when it will be sold directly to consumers and through phone companies, the Seattle Times reported.
Unifi is a media storage and streaming service that enables its users to store their photos, videos and music in the cloud and access them from different devices, including iPhones, Android devices, PCs and Mac computers. It will compete directly with Apple’s iCloud, according to All Things D.
RealNetworks said it intended to make the product available in the first quarter of 2011 when it presented Unifi at the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show, but the company told reporters it chose to delay the launch in order to work with Vodafone Germany on a coordinated rollout.
“Customers want to be able to easily find and enjoy the media they own, no matter where it resides,” said interim CEO Mike Lunsford in a statement. “With Unifi, they have the freedom to choose the phones, computers, tablets, services and platforms that best meet their changing needs — and still have access to all of the media they love.”
