Shazam and Twentieth Century Fox are using Shazamable TV ads to support the Dec. 16 release of Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked. The companies involved say this is the first time this combination of media has come together for a movie promotion.
Fans who use Shazam on a TV showing the relevant ad will be able to get a limited-time free download of Alvin and the Chipmunks version of Vacation, a song that was a hit both for The Go-Go’s and for the cute CGI rodents. Shazamers will also get access to watch an extended version of the movie’s trailer along with additional clips.
Having already demonstrated an interest in the movie, fans who Shazam the ad also will be offered a link to buy tickets to Chipwrecked and links to purchase the first two movies in the franchise from Amazon.com. Shazam’s Facebook integration feature encourages sharing, too.
“It’s incredibly exciting to be the first studio to incorporate an interactive mobile strategy using the Shazam App to promote Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked,” said Ira Rubenstein, executive vice president Domestic Theater Marketing, Twentieth Century Fox. “Shazam gives us the opportunity to promote the movie through traditional marketing channels, as well as engage fans on mobile devices.”
Trivial fun fact: this is the second time Vacation has been in the tech vanguard. Back in 1982 The Go-Go’s hit was the first U.S. “cassingle,” a short-lived music industry attempt to replace vinyl 45’s with what typically were two- or three-song cassette tapes.
