In addition, it closed the beta test of "Wonder Cruise," Nexon’s second Facebook game, in preparation for its launch late this month.

Dish Net's Blockbuster Service Is No Game-Changer … Yet [with video]

Dish Network and Blockbuster today announced that the long-rumored Blockbuster Movie Pass will go live on Oct. 1. The companies are positioning the subscription, which starts at $10 a month, as the industry’s first pay TV and streaming service bundle. The Blockbuster Movie Pass can only be purchased by customers who also subscribe to Dish TV and who have a Dish Network HD DVR. The service includes: a DVD/Blu-ray rental service by mail, from an extensive library of over 100,000 titles; streaming to TV or computer; video game physical product rental by mail; unlimited in-store exchanges; and over 20 premium movie channels.

"Big Bang Theory" Fake Game Turns Real

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today formally released its new Facebook game "The Big Bang Theory: Mystic Warlords of Ka’a," which has been in beta since July 27. The timing is not accidental. Warner Bros. Television's hit comedy returns to the screen tonight on CBS in back-to-back episodes kicking off its fifth season, having recently started to air five nights a week in off-network syndication.

Milestone: More Than 1 Million Pay for Hulu

Jason Kilar, CEO of Hulu, made good on his promise that his streaming video service would have 1 million paying customers before the end of the year. Speaking at a Goldman Sachs conference, Kilar also said Hulu is spending more than $375 million for content during 2011. Subscriptions to the premium Hulu Plus costs $7.99 a month, and Kilar said Hulu is on track to hit $500 million in revenue alone this year.

The bottom line of a new report is that Netflix may lose almost a third of its current subscribers. Raising prices on entertainment when customers aren’t confident they can pay more essential bills can be a regrettable necessity, but it needs to be handled carefully. The same goes for dramatic changes in what a subscription includes. Netflix did both of these things abruptly and confusingly, and now Magid Advisors, a unit of research firm Frank N. Magid Associates, has analyzed what it and other factors may cost the company.

Lockerz, a membership site that rewards its members for interacting with content, today announced the acquisition of Vodpod.com and related assets from Remixation Inc. Now Lockerz members will be able to earn the community’s virtual currency by creating personalized channels featuring video content from anywhere online in addition to the Lockerz library of videos. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

'DC Universe Online' Drops Subs for Tiered Free-to-Play [with Video]

Sony Online Entertainment has decided to adopt a flexible free-to-play business model for DC Universe Online, the company’s popular massively multiplayer online game. Beginning late October, it will be free to download the PC and PlayStation 3 version of the game, after which players can choose from three separate levels of game options and benefits: Free, Premium and Legendary.

GE Energy Invests $50 Million to Reach Captive Viewers

Wayne, a GE Energy business, today announced an investment of over $50 million in a television network that has a captive audience – Gas Station TV. The funding will be used to deploy inOvationTV, a new jointly developed media platform, at gas stations throughout the country. This new platform delivers licensed content including sports from ESPN, business and personal finance news from Bloomberg TV, local weather from AccuWeather, and GSTV’s original social media television show, "Your Neighborhood." It is available free of charge to qualified stations.

TechStars Establishes $24 M Fund for Startups [with Video]

Web incubator TechStars, currently the subject of a Bloomberg TV reality show, announced a new fund of over $24 million which will be used to offer a $100,000 convertible debt note to every company it accepts. The funding is provided by a pool of venture capital firms that includes Avalon, DFJ Mercury, Foundry Group, IA Ventures, Right Side Capital, Silicon Valley Bank, SoftBank Capital, DFJ Mercury and RRE, as well as TechStars alumni and several individuals.
