The Washington Post Puts Newsweek Magazine on the Block

0

Washington
– Nearly 50 years after first acquiring the weekly news magazine, The
Washington Post Company said on Wednesday that it is exploring the possible
sale of Newsweek. The company has retained Allen & Company to help find
potential buyers for the publication, which has seen mounting red ink over the
past three years.

"The losses at Newsweek in 2007-2009 are a matter of
record. Despite heroic efforts on the part of Newsweek’s management and staff,
we expect it to still lose money in 2010," said Donald Graham, chairman of
The Washington Post.

"Newsweek is a lively, important magazine and
website, and in the current climate, it might be a better fit elsewhere."

Newsweek was launched in 1933, and purchased by The Washington Post in 1961.

Twitter Offers Tweet Copy-and-Paste Feature

0

San Francisco
Twitter is launching a new feature that will replace the current practice of
taking screen captures of tweets in order to display them on third-party sites.
The feature will generate a snippet of code that users will be able to use
instead to generate copies of flat-HTML tweets, which CNET notes will allow
users on third-party sites where the tweets are pasted to themselves easily copy
the actual text and links within the tweets.

Online Privacy Bill Criticized for Weak Consumer Protections

0

Washington
– A number of consumer and privacy advocates are criticizing new draft
legislation intended to address online privacy as not going far enough to
protect consumers. Introduced by Rep. Rick Boucher (D-Va.), chairman of the
House Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet, and ranking
member Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.), the bill’s draft language intends to increase
privacy protections for consumers by compelling companies to disclose data
collection policies, and seeks to regulate ad networks and other data collecting
services.

"Our legislation confers privacy rights on individuals,
informing them of the personal information that is collected and shared about
them and giving them greater control over the collection, use and sharing of
that information," said Boucher.

However, groups including the Electronic
Frontier Foundation (EFF), Consumer Action, and Center for Democracy and
Technology criticized the draft legislation as not protective enough of
consumers’ privacy.

"It still largely depends on the opting in and out
regime where notice and consent is kind of at the center of privacy practices,"
Leslie Harris, executive director of the Center for Democracy and Technology, told
Wired.com. "At least from CDT’s perspective, notice and consent has not
been working."

"Please explain to me why a marketer would need your
information for 18 months?" Michelle DeMooy, senior associate for national
priorities at Consumer Action, asked during a call with reporters, referring to
the bill’s allowance for marketers to hold consumer data for 18 months before
being required to delete it.

Connecticut AG Issues Subpoena Over Craiglist Prostitution Ads

0

San Francisco – Richard Blumenthal, the attorney general of
the state of Connecticut, has served online classifieds site Craigslist with a
subpoena, intended to challenge the site’s contention that it has gone out of
its way to eliminate illegal ads for prostitution.

Blumenthal’s press release
cites a recent report that indicated Craigslist could draw $36 million from sex
ads, which under new rules implemented by Craigslist may only be purchased by
users with a valid telephone number and credit card.

"The craigslist
brothel business seems booming — belying its promise to fight
prostitution," Blumenthal said.

"The best evidence is thousands of
ads that remain on craigslist — skimpily and slickly disguised with code
words. We are asking craigslist for specific answers about steps to screen and
stop sex-for-money offers — and whether the company is actually profiting from
prostitution ads that it promised the states and public that it would try to
block."

In a blog post, Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster said Blumenthal was "once
again indulging in self-serving publicity at the expense of the truth and his
constituents."

"As AG Blumenthal knows full well, craigslist has gone
beyond fulfilling its legal obligations, far beyond classifieds industry norms,
has more than lived up to any promises it made, and working together with its
partners is in fact a leader in the fight against human trafficking and
exploitation," Buckmaster added.
