Los Angeles – Apple (NASD: AAPL) is working with SIM card maker Gemalto
on an iPhone SIM card that would allow users to select a wireless carrier and
sign up for service online or at an Apple Store, GigaOm reported, citing
sources inside European carriers.

Consumers could also conceivably active the
handset via a download from Apple’s App Store.

Neither company would comment on
the report for GigaOm, which noted that such a SIM card-enabled iPhone would
fare better in Europe, where iPhone carrier exclusivity deals have largely
ended, and most networks rely on the same technology.
