Framingham, Mass. – Microsoft (NASD: MSFT) will sell 2.5 million to 3
million Kinect motion-sensing game controller systems for the Xbox 360 in the
U.S. during the fourth quarter, while Sony (NYSE: SNE) will sell between 2 million and 2.5
million Move motion controllers for the PlayStation 3, according to a prediction
market survey from IDC.
"While it doesn’t appear Kinect or Move will be
this year’s Tickle Me Elmo, millions of additional U.S. households will be
enjoying motion-based gaming this holiday season," said IDC’s Lewis Ward.
Wii MotionPlus controller has an installed base over 10 million units right now
but the new interfaces and associated games from Sony and Microsoft are going
to give many shoppers pause moving forward."
The Web-based survey of more
than 750 younger male console gamers also found that the top-selling console
games in the U.S. during the holiday shopping period will be Activision’s (NASD: ATVI)
"Call of Duty: Black Ops";
LucasArts’ "Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II"; Electronic
Arts’ (NASD: ERTS) "Medal of Honor"; and Microsoft’s "Halo: Reach" and
"Fallout: New Vegas."
