San Mateo, Calif. — MyRete, the makers of WhosHere, a mobile app that specializes in social location, has closed a $1.25 million first round of funding.

Led by LightBank, the company plans to use the funding to continue developing its software that is used by more than four million registered users already. LightBank is a Chicago-based fund that grants between $100,000 and $5 million to early-stage companies, and was started by Groupon’s co-founders Brad Keywell and Eric Lefkofsky.

“We are excited that LightBank has embraced our vision,” said Bryant Harris, founder & CEO. “The investment will allow us to continue to scale our business and expand the team to meet the growing demand for our service.”

WhosHere enables users to meet nearby people, often working as a dating app. Users can interact with these nearby users through free MMS image sending, SMS texting and VoIP calls.
