Bentonville, Ark. – Retail giant Wal-Mart (NYSE:  WMT) has announced it
will introduce a branded mobile phone service plan, which will run on
T-Mobile’s network in the U.S. The Wal-Mart Family Mobile service will cost $45
per month for unlimited calling and texting per line, with additional lines for
costing $25 each.

The Associated Press notes that Wal-Mart has been offering
prepaid plans from both Verizon and Sprint, although neither of those offerings
are Wal-Mart-branded.

The new Wal-Mart service won’t require that users sign to a contract term, or undergo credit checks.

The
company will initially carry five handsets aligned with the service, ranging
from a $35 Nokia phone to a $249 Motorola Cliq XT smartphone.

  1. Why would you waste your money on this when you just buy Straight Talk from the same aisle for $45 a month for unlimited everything and great nationwide coverage.

  2. Will be interesting to see how they do against the post-paid industry, but I’d have to agree with Oscar; Straight Talk is offered at the same price, but offers web, 411 and better coverage, with NO bills. I think I’ll stick with what I know and trust.

  3. That’s a good point if it’s just for one person, but my wife and I have four boys. You figure how much that’ll save us! I did. As soon as my contract is up, I’m buying it!

  4. I love love love Straight Talk. I bought their smartphone, and it is amazing considering I only pay $45 a month for unlimited text, minutes, AND data. Unlimited data is pretty much…unheard of. Since I own a restaurant, I need those extra minutes and any data I can get to track deliveries.

  5. why because when you have family members you only pay 25 for extra lines. i am trying to find Spanish version of this article and help friends get this phone service. Noone told my friend who has 5 phones in her family about the additional line charging less from walmart.
