Study: Young People Do Care About Online Privacy

0

New York – Contrary to
conventional wisdom, young people are concerned about online privacy issues,
according to a new survey conducted by researchers at the University
of California, Berkeley
and the University
of Pennsylvania, the
Associated Press reported. Eighty-eight percent of all those surveyed, and 82%
of young adults, said they have refused to give out information to a business
when they deemed it too revealing or unnecessary.

Most believe that uploaders
should get permission from the subject of a photo or video before posting it
online — 86% of the total survey, and 84% of young adults ages 18 to 24
agreed.

About 40% of the 18 to 24 and 35 to 44 demographics alike also said
they believe executives whose companies use personal information without
permission should face jail time.

"Yes, there are some young people who
are posting racy photographs and personal information. But those anecdotes
might not represent what the average young person is doing online," Chris
Hoofnagle, co-author of the study and director of information privacy programs
at the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology, told AP.

Citing Wireless Interference, Israel Bans Import of iPad

0

Jerusalem – Israel has
banned the import of Apple’s (NASD: AAPL) iPad into the country, saying the device’s
wireless connectivity features are incompatible with its national standards and
could potentially interfere with existing devices, the Associated Press
reported.

The ban even prevents tourists from bringing their iPads into the
country; the AP cited customs officials saying 10 iPads had already been
confiscated.

The AP noted that the U.S.
allows Wi-Fi broadcasting at higher power levels than are permitted in Europe
and Israel
— though no European nations have thus far talked about an import ban.

"If
you operate equipment in a frequency band which is different from the others
that operate on that frequency band, then there will be interference," Nati
Schubert, a senior deputy director for Israel’s Communications Ministry,
told AP.

"We don’t care where people buy their equipment … but without
regulation, you would have chaos."

Schubert added that he expects Apple to
remedy the issue before the iPad’s international release in May.

MySpace Introduces New Events, Ticketing Platform

1

Los Angeles
– News Corp.’s (NYSE: NWS) MySpace online social network has launched a new Events and
ticketing platform.

A new Events tab on the MySpace home page will include
features like a Calendar that integrates a user’s own events, friends’ events,
evens like tour dates from artists they follow, Facebook events, and sponsored
events from advertisers.

The music-related elements of Events will borrow from
its iLike subsidiary, allowing users to see which other users plan to attend
particular concerts.

Unlike previously, artists will be now able to sell concert
tickets directly from their profile pages.

MySpace director of events and
ticketing Marcus Womack told Billboard the Events platform was designed with
event promotion and ticketing equally in mind.

Library of Congress to Archive Entire History of Twitter "Tweets"

0

Washington
– Acknowledging the growing importance of social media, the Library of Congress
said on Wednesday that it plans to digitally archive every public
"tweet" since the launch of microblogging service Twitter in 2006.

Fittingly, the library announced the news in a Twitter post to its 50,000
followers on the service. Twitter processes more than 50 million tweets a day.

"It boggles my mind to think what we might be able to learn about
ourselves and the world around us from this wealth of data," wrote Matt
Raymond, the library’s director of communications, in a blog post.

"And
I’m certain we’ll learn things that none of us now can even possibly
conceive."

The Library of Congress said that it has been collecting
materials from the web since it began harvesting congressional and presidential
campaign web sites in 2000, and currently holds more than 167 terabytes of Web-based
information.

Report: Global 3D TV Market to Be Worth $17 Billion by 2014

0

London
– The worldwide 3D television business is projected to be worth more than $17
billion by 2014, according to a new report from market research firm Generator
Research.

An expected 3.1 million (1.4%) of the total 225 million TV sets
shipped worldwide this year will support 3D; the market share for 3D sets is
expected to reach over 39% by 2014.

The firm noted that the underlying marginal
cost of implementing 3D is a lot less than it was for HD, and that 3D cinema is
creating a ‘halo’ effect helping drive adoption of 3D television.

The Hollywood studios increased their production of 3D movies
in 2009 by 150%, to a total of 20 films, and over 50 are planned for release in
2010.
