Cupertino, Calif. – Apple’s (NASD: AAPL) App Store has now approved 500,000 applications for distribution to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users, after less than three years of operations, Wired reported, citing data tracked by 148Apps.

The App Store launched with 500 apps and reached 100,000 within about a year.

The analysis by 148Apps found that around 36% of all App Store apps are free, while the average price for paid apps is $3.64.

For comparison, Google’s Android Market currently offers some 300,000 apps.
