San Francisco – Twitter on Wednesday launched its in-house URL shortening service, which will see links pasted by users when tweeting on Twitter.com automatically shortened to 19 characters.

The t.co link shortener will automatically shorten any link longer than 13 characters, and inform users how many of their limited 140 characters remain with the shortened link added.

Twitter said in a blog post that the new link shortening feature “increases security.”

“Since we show a shortened version of the original link, people will know which site the link points to… If users click links that are reported as malicious, we direct them to a page that warns them.”
